Success at Scottish Schools Rowing Championships

St Andrew Boat Club and George Watson's College take on the "Ergs"!

The Scottish Schools Indoor Rowing Championships took place on Friday the 20th of November at Bellahouston Sports Centre in Glasgow. An impressive 520 students from schools across Scotland competed during the action packed event.

Included in the 520 competitors were rowers from St Andrew Boat Club and George Watson’s College. St Andrew BC had 5 members competing at the Championships. In the S3 single Maddie Rothero (James Gillespies) rowed well to 14th overall in a field of 44 athletes. In the S4 Girls single event, club members made up 3 of the top 5 finishers. Robyn Paton (Peebles High) took silver, with Ellen Brignall (Balerno HS) rowing into bronze and Rebekah Thomson (Firrhill HS) rounded out the top 5 in 5th. Ellen had further success at the championships as part of Balerno High School’s S4 Girls team who won the overall team title. Finally Rachel Chowings (James Gillespies) rowing in the S6 girls single category secured a podium finish taking a bronze. Congratulation to the girls on their success.

George Watson’s sent a highly competitive squad to the championship with pupils competing in all year group categories. The school posted strong results in both the individual and team events. In the S2 single events, the school had two silvers with Anna Buchanan and Lachlan White in the girls and boys races. Roisin Ramsay made the podium in the Girls S3 single event taking bronze. Fergus Mainland rowed to top spot scooping the gold in the Boys S5 single event. In the S6 Boys event Ben Carruthers took the school’s final individual medal with a bronze. The school did exceptional well in the Team events with 2nd in the S2 Girls and Boys, 3rd in the S3 Boys, 3rd in the S4 Girls, 2nd in the S5 Girls and 1st in the Open Boys Team event. Congratulations to all the competitors from GWC.
